It took 15 years, but somebody finally beat Indiana's 1976 basketball team.
The 1991 UNLV Runnin' Rebels, who are trying to become the first undefeated team since that Indiana squad to win the NCAA title, beat the '76 Hoosiers on Tuesday in the Unbeatens Only computer tournament.Larry Johnson and Anderson Hunt each scored 16 points and UNLV dominated on the boards to beat the Hoosiers 78-70. In another opening-round game, Lew Alcindor scored 33 points as his 1967 UCLA team eliminated the 1957 North Carolina squad 82-66.
The games were produced for The Associated Press by Lance Haffner Computer Games as part of a tournament matching unbeaten UNLV against the seven teams that have won the NCAA championship with perfect records. The games are played without either a shot clock or 3-point field goals.
Bill Walton-led UCLA teams swept the opening doubleheader on Monday. His 1972 Bruins beat Bill Russell's 1956 San Francisco squad 71-63 and his 1973 UCLA team downed the 1964 UCLA squad 80-73.
In Wednesday's semifinals, it will be '72 UCLA vs. '73 UCLA and 1991 UNLV vs. '67 UCLA.
