What do lobsters, kumquats, milk, and Zions First National Bank have in common? They all can be found at the local Smith's grocery store.
Zions Bank has joined with Smith's in 14 Utah stores, with one other grocery store and with 8 affiliate stores in Nevada, to bring full-service banking to the consumer."Other banks in the country are trying in-store banking," said William W. Hall, senior vice president and manager of banking centers for Zions. "Based on the cost to put in the facility and the hours and the traffic those (in-store banks) generate, it's a thing of the future."
Three years ago Zions Bank decided to work with Smith's in Utah and Nevada. "It was obvious to us that the potential is there," Hall said. "It is a tremendous source for new customers. We are very pleased with the results."
The Orem Smith's branch is a full-service bank offering savings and checking accounts, a 24-hour automatic teller, investments, discount brokering, CDs, IRAs, a speedy tax-refund service and more.
"We are geared toward the customer's transactional process. But we also provide insurance, sources for mortgage loans and provide investment services - the same things that are offered at our other banks," Hall said.
Perhaps the most appealing service is the expanded hours. The bank is open between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
"Some people just can't believe it," said Janet Bodily, branch manager. "We get most of our phone calls on Saturday."
According to Bodily it's not just the grocery shoppers that have accounts at the bank, many businesses have opened accounts there as well.
"Businesses like the night drop facilities offered inside the store," she said. "They feel there is more security being inside a store that is open 24 hours a day."
As the branch manager, Bodily is excited with the success of the Orem branch. "This branch is up there with the growth patterns in other branches," she said.
Hall also likes what he's seeing. "I am very pleased with the growth, we are growing every month with deposits and customers," he said. "I've been in banking for 24 years and this is one of the most innovative things to happen in the banking industry."
Not all Smith's stores will have a Zion's Bank, according to Hall. But all future Smith's superstores will have one.
"As Smith's expands, we will expand with Smith's," Hall said.
