A potential earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale was the basis of a seismic study's ratings of all the buildings in the Jordan School District.

The Richter is a logarithmic scale, and every digit past the decimal shows a tenfold increase in an earthquake's intensity. For example, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake is 10 times stronger than a 6.0 quake. A 6.2 is 10 times stronger than a 6.1, and so forth. The devastating October 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, measured 7.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was about 60 miles south of San Francisco. The largest earthquakes are in the upper 8 range of the scale.

The earthquake potential of the Wasatch Fault extends about 50 miles east and west of the west face of the Wasatch Mountains, and runs from Levan, Juab County, on the south to the Idaho border on the north.

Earthquakes along the fault are infrequent - about every 300 years on the average - but are quite severe, according to consulting engineer Larry Reaveley.

"We might have an earthquake tomorrow; we might be 50 years away," Reaveley told the Jordan School District board Tuesday night.
