Lakeview Hospital is providing its smallest patients with car seats.

Starting April 1, the Women's Special Care department at the Bountiful hospital will give new parents free infant car seats. In the past, the hospital allowed parents to rent the seats.Kay Matsumura, chief executive officer of Lakeview Hospital, said parents shouldn't start the bad habit of holding their baby in their laps during car travel, even on a short ride home from the hospital. The car seat being given away has been rated one of the safest models on the market, according to consumer research.

While Utah has a "law of love" requiring all children to under the age of 2 to ride in an approved car safety seat, officials don't check compliance.
