Gov. Norm Bangerter told state and local law enforcement authorities that he is satisfied with their efforts at curbing gang activities and said he doesn't see the need for a new group to fight the problem.

Recently, West Valley City Police Chief Dennis J. Nordfelt called for formation of a county or statewide gang commission to develop a long-term strategy for dealing with gangs. But Utah Public Safety Commissioner Doug Bodrero and other law enforcement authorities asked the governor Monday to continue funding the Salt Lake Area Gang Project instead of creating a new organization.

The gang project, which collects information on gang members and provides community programs, received a $200,000 federal grant through the state last year that must be matched with local funding.

Bangerter told them they can expect to get the same amount again this year. "I don't know who I could better turn to and rely on than these people," the governor said.
