Earl Dee Haws, 87, of Escalante, died March 19, 1991 at his home in Escalante.

Born December 13, 1903 in Boulder, Utah, to John Franklin and Wilhelmina Smith Haws. Married Elda Barker February 18, 1925. Solemnized June 11, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. His earlier years were spent in Boulder. He then moved to Escalante, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated in the first graduating class of the Escalante High School. He served an LDS mission to the Northwestern States Mission from June, 1925 to August, 1927. He was an active member of the LDS Church. Served as first counselor to the Stake President and second counselor in a Bishopric. He served as a stake and ward MIA president. He and his wife, Elda, were ordinance workers in the St. George LDS Temple. He coach M.M. Basketball. His teams went to State tournements for many years. He was also active in civic activities. He was a Garfield County Commissioner, president of Pine Creek and Escalante Irrigation Boards. Also served as president of the Escalante Riding Club.Survived by his wife of 66 years, Escalante; two sons, three daughters, Klyn B. and Marlene Haws, Phyllis and Freland Alvey, all Escalante; Donald D. and Ethel Haws, Killeen, Texas; Lois and Ray Barney, Kaysville; Jean and Kendall Dutton, Ephraim; two nephews whom he raised, Jerald Haycock, Sandy and Larry Haycock, deceased; 20 grandchildren 42 great-grandchildren; preceded in death by nine brothers and

sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 23, 1991 at 1 p.m. in the Escalante LDS Stake Center, where friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday morning. Burial: Escalante Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Neal S. Magleby and Sons Mortuary.
