Hercules Aerospace on Monday announced that 80 people will be laid off from its Bacchus plant.

The majority of the layoffs are in the advanced materials and computer services divisions, Hercules spokesman Bill Hawkesworth said."Those two areas in particular have been affected by governmental cutbacks, contract delays and project cancellations," Hawkesworth said.

Since September, Hercules has released 282 employees.

The force reductions are part of a move toward "right sizing," or cost-cutting, measures at Hercules, which employs about 4,100 people, Hawkesworth said. More layoffs are expected, he said.

The company offers severance compensation and is assisting affected employees in seeking new jobs, he said.
