Police opened fire on supporters of the African National Congress after they were attacked with machetes, spears and other weapons in the black township of Daveyton, police said. The violence left 12 people dead and 29 wounded.

Police Maj. Ray Harrald said the clash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday when a crowd estimated at 200 ANC supporters ignored a warning to disperse. Harrald said the crowd attacked the policemen with firearms, petrol bombs, machetes and spears.
