BYU completed a four-game sweep over Mesa State College Saturday with a doubleheader victory, 7-1 and 4-1.

First baseman Chris Cooper hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give BYU its initial lead. Designated hitter Brent Brown hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.Pitcher Dave Madsen went the seven inning distance, striking out six, to improve his record to 3-1.

In the nightcap, BYU got three good pitching performances.

Starter Aaron Mirandon was credited with his first victory, followed by one-hit reliefs by Lance Clark and Ryan Hancock. Hancock, who had just completed quarterback duties in a scrimmage hours before, earned his second save and struck out two batters.

Centerfielder John Wagner hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Cougars the lead in game two. Mesa took the early lead when catcher Anthony Carnevale scored on a wild pitch.

BYU is now 11-7, while Mesa is 11-17.
