Police Friday released the name of a woman who, eyewitnesses said, died trying to protect a frightened toddler after the pickup truck she was driving stalled and was struck by a freight train.
Killed in the accident was:Barbaranne Duncan, 22, Clearfield.
Duncan was dead on arrival at Humana Hospital Davis North in Layton Thursday afternoon. Kelli Mancuso, 4, suffered cuts but she was released from the hospital Friday.
Both were in the pickup when the northbound Union Pacific train struck the vehicle at about 40 mph, pushing it about 1,500 feet down the track, police said. The toddler was extricated from the wreckage.
Duncan was giving four neighborhood teenagers and two toddlers a ride when the vehicle stalled at a crossing about 2:45 p.m., police reports said.
