Salt Lake police arrested a man Friday morning in connection with the abduction and rape of a 16-year-old girl.

The girl was walking along Redwood Road near 13th North about midnight when a man pulled up beside her in a car, called her by name and said he was told by her mother to give her a ride, according to sex crimes detective Pat Smith. The girl accepted and the driver took her to Affleck Park in Emigration Canyon, where she was allowed to go to the bathroom, according to a police report. But she attempted to flee and was tackled by the assailant, who then raped her.

Campers, awakened by her screams, apparently prompted the rapist to flee. One camper took the girl to a hospital, and police were called.

A description of the suspect's car was broadcast over the police frequencies. Officer Shelley Stevensen located a car matching the description in an apartment complex in the area of where the girl was abducted, Smith said.

Josafat T. Martinez, 23, was located in an apartment and later booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of forcible rape.
