United Press International Tornadoes skipped through north Texas and Arkansas early Friday while light snow, freezing rain and freezing drizzle glazed roadways in Michigan one day after the southern part of the state basked in record spring warmth.
An early spring storm system passed through southern Oklahoma Thursday night, destroying nine homes at Ada. Another 50 homes were damaged but there were no serious injuries, police said.Officials in Fort Worth investigated whether strong winds were a factor in the collapse of an 80-foot light pole at Fort Worth that killed two tourists. Tornadoes also were sited in Hunt County, Texas, and in Arkansas, but no damage or injuries were reported.
Farther west, winter weather persisted despite the arrival of spring. A warning for heavy snowfall was posted for the central mountains of Arizona and a snow advisory was in effect over Wyoming and Colorado.
In California, which began March in the midst of a five-year drought, more rain and snow were forecast. The wet weather was expected to extend into Nevada during the weekend.
A winter weather advisory was posted Friday for most of the Lake Superior shoreline counties in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Snow was forecast for the area Saturday.
