A Salt Lake police officer was injured Wednesday when a man struck him over the head with a wine bottle.

Officer Art Vantielen was off-duty but was working as a security officer at the Utah State Liquor store at 200 W. 400 South. He was attempting to arrest an 18-year-old man for drunk-and-disorderly conduct when the man ran away. The officer chased him and was attempting to handcuff him when "a transient came out of the darkness and struck the officer over the head with a wine bottle," a police report stated.

The blow caused the officer to become disorientated and dizzy, which allowed both suspects to escape. But off-duty Orem police officer Don Aucion saw the assault and cornered both suspects.

Vantielen was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
