The Irish Republican Army claimed responsibility Friday for shooting and wounding the widow of a policeman who was slain by the group four years ago.

Police said another woman and her 4-year-old daughter barely escaped being hit.Margaret Cooke suffered multiple gunshot wounds in Thursday's shooting, which occurred as she sat in her car at a traffic light close to the Londonderry police station where she worked, police said.

She underwent emergency surgery and was "serious but stable."
