To the editor:
I was invited to give a keynote address at The Conference on the Discourse of Environmental Advocacy, sponsored by the Humanities Institute at the University of Utah, July 29-31. I have canceled my plans to speak at the conference and to vacation in Utah afterward in support of the Utah NOW call for a worldwide boycott of Utah until the state anti-abortion law - the most restrictive anti-abortion law in the United States - is repealed. In particular, I protest that Utah denies women in Utah their civil right to decide whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term. The anti-abortion law was shoved through committee and did not allow adequate time for public testimony, precisely because the majority of people in Utah support a woman's right to abortion.
I will not spend money in the state of Utah and will advertise that message to colleagues and environmental organizations, until this anti-woman law is repealed.
