Salt Lake City library officials are encouraging book lovers to visit nearby libraries in September to sign up for library cards during National Library Sign-up Month.
Gov. Norm Bangerter and Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis have proclaimed September "Library Card Sign-up Month" in Utah and Salt Lake City.Readers can visit the city's Main Library at 209 E. 5th South or come to the city's Anderson, Avenues, Chapman, Rose Park or Sprague library branches to sign up for cards.
At many libraries, children getting a new library card will receive a special sticker declaring "I Got Carded at the Library."
The national campaign to sign up children for a library card began in 1987 when First Lessons, a report by U.S. Secretary of Education William Bennett, was released.
"Let's have a national campaign: every child should obtain a library card - and use it," Bennett wrote in the report.
The American Library Association accepted Bennett's challenge and in 1987 launched a library card sign-up campaign.
