An Israeli human rights group has accused Israel's secret service of beating or otherwise mistreating Palestinian prisoners during interrogation and urged an independent investigation.

Betselem, the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, alleged that up to 6,000 of the 75,000 Palestinians arrested over the past three years had been mistreated during questioning. The arrest rate was high because the army has been trying to put down the 39-month-old Arab uprising against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
