A Salt Lake County man is in serious condition after the car he was driving slammed into the rear of a semi-tanker truck parked at 651 S. Redwood Road late Wednesday.
Elfego Aguilar, 51, no current address, was taken by ambulance to LDS Hospital and treated for head lacerations following the 11:40 p.m. accident.Witnesses said the car Aguilar was driving was "weaving erratically" before it struck the rear of a tank containing 3000 gallons of furnace oil. The car was traveling about 45 mph when the accident occurred.
The impact did not rupture the tank or cause any leaks. However, emergency personnel arriving at the scene were concerned about explosions because an incorrect sign on the tanker said it contained gasoline.
"Gasoline ignites more easily than furnace oil," Salt Lake Police Sgt. Scott Folsom said.
A hazardous materials truck was dispatched to the accident but was not needed.
No other injuries were reported.
