Sen. Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., the Senate GOP whip, apologized Wednesday for calling a Cable News Network reporter, Peter Arnett, a sympathizer to Baghdad, but criticized Arnett for his reporting from Baghdad.

Simpson's remarks were contained in a letter to the New York Times printed Wednesday. While Simpson said he regretted "any hurt, pain or anguish" he had caused the Arnett family, he said Arnett and other reporters in Baghdad gave Saddam photo opportunities to express his view to the world.
