A head-on collision involving a car and a semitrailer truck killed a Heber City man early Tuesday morning.

Jack Richard Matty, 43, was killed after his vehicle rolled after the collision and burst into flames, said a Utah Highway Patrol dispatcher. The accident occurred about 1:45 a.m., one mile west of Heber City on U.S. 40. The dispatcher said Matty was traveling east when his car crossed over the center line and struck the truck, driven by Kenneth Lee Hardy, 27, Roosevelt.

The tanker trailer rolled and began spilling its load of crude oil, the dispatcher said. The spill forced UHP troopers to close the road for about 8 hours. Traffic was detoured along Midway Lane during the closure.

Hardy was taken to Wasatch County Hospital and then transferred to the University Hospital, where he remained in stable condition Wednesday.
