A 69-year-old Fillmore man was killed Monday night after his car was smashed by a stolen car driven by a 16-year-old boy trying to elude police in a high-speed chase.
Boyd K. Day was killed when his car was struck in a south Provo intersection. Several vehicles were hit in the crash. His wife Mary K. Day, 52, was hospitalized after the crash. She is in serious condition at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.Utah Highway Patrol officers began pursuing the youth, who had run away from a Las Vegas juvenile facility, about 6 p.m. on I-15 south of Spanish Fork. Vehicles from the Utah County sheriff's office, Springville Police and Provo Police joined in the chase. Speeds in the chase exceeded 90 mph at times.
The chase ended when the boy exited I-15, crashing into a group of cars at the intersection of East Bay Boulevard and University Avenue. Day's car was struck broadside by the fleeing car.
The unidentified runaway was treated for injuries and released to the custody of officials at the Provo Detention Center, where he is being held pending further investigation.
