President Bush signed legislation Monday that improves employment and health benefits for veterans who served in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm.

Among other things, the new law requires health insurance carriers to reinstate coverage without imposing a waiting period and beefs up current re-employment protections for reservists on active duty for more than 90 days. The law also provides more protection for families of service personnel who pay rent for their living accommodations and gives military doctors a break on malpractice insurance premiums.
