The Showdown Classic golf tournament will celebrate its 10th anniversary when it plays host to the PGA Senior Tour again this summer.
The Showdown will be played the week of Aug. 5-11 at the Jeremy Ranch Golf Club. Announcement of the dates was made by the Friends of Utah Golf at a press conference at the State Capitol Monday.The tournament week will be similar to last year's event. On Tuesday (Aug. 6), a Skins Game featuring four of the top senior players will be played in the morning. In the afternoon, the Merrill Lynch Shootout will be contested, with 10 players competing. Pro-ams will be played Wednesday and Thursday, before the 54-hole tournament gets under way Friday. The tournament purse will be $350,000, the same as last year.
Defending champion Rives McBee is expected to play along with many of the top players from the Senior Tour. Tournament officials are trying to get as many golfers from the 1981 tournament as possible. Billy Casper, the winner of the intitial tournament is also expected to play.
The five major sponsors of the tournament will be American Express, Pepsi, Ryder Trucks, US WEST, and Intermountain Publishing.
