Around the world in 10 years - on foot - is the ambition of a 23-year-old English woman who arrived in South Africa this week midway through her walk.

Since Ffyona Campbell set out in 1983 at the age of 16, she has covered 7,500 miles through Britain, the United States and Australia."I walked halfway around the world away from home to get rid of a lot of suppression that I had in my childhood," said Campbell, originally from Dartmouth, on the southwest coast of England.

Backed financially by three corporations during the African leg of her journey, she plans to begin walking on April 2, followed by an all-terrain vehicle with three drivers. The route will take her through South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zaire, the Central African Republic, Nigeria, Niger and Algeria. She hopes to reach Algiers in April next year.
