PST Vans Inc. has opened new offices and an operational center at 1901 W. 2100 South, and officials are looking forward to a continued upgrading of its tractor and trailer fleet this year.
Kenneth R. Norton, owner and chairman, said the company previously purchased eight acres west of the old facility and added 25,000 square feet to its existing 25,000 square feet of office space. PST Vans employs 1,800 nationwide with 350 based in the corporate office.Only 5 percent of PST Vans' business is conducted in Utah, he said, with the remainder handled at 22 service and maintenance centers nationwide. New facilities recently were opened in Memphis, Tenn.; Davenport, Iowa; and Columbus, Ohio.
PST has a fleet of 1,100 tractors and 2,500 high-cube van trailers that operate nationwide, but the company has started an aggressive equipment purchase plan to modernize its fleet.
The company has received 200 new Freightliner tractors and an additional 200 Freightliner and 100 Volvo White tractors will be delivered from April through June. That and other deliveries mean that by the end of 1991 more than 50 percent of the tractor fleet will be 1991 models.
Also, PST recently took delivery on 670 Stoughton trailers, will receive another 200 new Stoughtons in the next 30 days, 100 more Stoughtons in the second quarter and 300 Dorsey trailers in the third quarter. All are the 53-by-102-foot high-capacity design.
That means by the end of the year 50 percent of the trailers the company owns will be 1991 models and 80 percent will be the high-capacity variety, Norton said.
