Maurice Abravanel, Utah's "Elder Statesman of Music" and the former music director of the Utah Symphony, will speak as part of the Brigham Young University Music Lecture Series on Thursday, March 21.
The free lecture, to be presented at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall of BYU's Harris Fine Arts Center, was planned for earlier in the month but was rescheduled. It is open to the public.Abravanel led the Utah Symphony from 1947 until his retirement in 1979. Earlier he conducted in Berlin and Paris and at one point became the youngest conductor to occupy the podium of the Metropolitan Opera. Currently he is artist-in-residence at Tanglewood and on the boards of the Utah Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
