The Salt Lake City Arts Council is presenting the return engagement of the Modern Mandolin Quartet at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 16. The quartet, known for its versatile and lively repertoire of composers such as Brahms, Copland and contemporary American pieces, will perform in the Museum of Fine Arts auditorium on the University of Utah campus. The Modern Mandolin Quartet recently released its critically acclaimed second album, "Intermezzo," on the Windham Hill label and performed on the nationally broadcast PBS series "Lonesome Pine Special" and NPR radio programs. The group includes Mike Marshall and Dana Rath on mandolins, Paul Binkley on mandola and John Imholtz on mando-cello. Marshall, who conceived and founded the quartet in the mid-'80s, gained notoriety as a virtuoso mandolinist from his work with the David Grisman Quartet.
