Royden C. Braithwaite, 78, died March 11, 1991 of cancer.
Born November 10, 1912 to Charles G. and Eva Tuttle Braithwaite, in Manti, Utah. Married Alice Todd, June 9, 1938 in the Manti LDS Temple. He was educated in Manti schools, Snow College, Brigham Young University, Stanford University and received his PhD from Cornell University. A daughter, Beverly, sister, Maurine, brother, Burke and his parents, preceded him in death. He spent much of his life teaching and providing leadership for others. He positively influenced many people over the course of his life, first in LDS Church schools, then as a chaplain in World War II, and also while studying at Cornell University. He was Dean of Family Living and coordinator of student affairs at BYU. From 1955-78 he was President of Southern Utah State College. Under his leadership SUSC became an independent four year college and the Utah Shakespearean Festival was started. He cherished the beauty found in nature, art and music. He always shaped his surroundings to include these things which is evidenced by the beauty found on SUSC campus. He received many honors and awards throughout his life, but none brought him more pride than his family.He is survived by his wife, Alice, Cedar City; Douglas and Jan Braithwaite, Belmont, Massachusetts; Karl and Jane Braithwaite, Los Alamos, New Mexico; Robert and Arlene Braithwaite, Cedar City; Elaine and Burke Jolley, Park City; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Reed, Sepulveda, California; Wilbur, Manti.
Funeral Services Friday, 1 p.m., Cedar City Ninth LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. and Friday 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Southern Utah Mortuary. Interment: Cedar City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Southern Utah University, or Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City.
