U.S. intelligence analysts believe Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is losing power and will be out of office within a year, U.S. News and World Report said Saturday.

Analysts from the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency believe that more power over day-to-day decisions is held by KGB chief Vladimir Kryuchkov and Defense Minister Dimitri Yazov than by Gorbachev, the magazine said. The CIA has said that Gorbachev is suffering from "acute emotional and psychological tension," it said.
