A Davis County public works employee received the 1990 Safety Award from the Utah chapter of the American Public Works Association at its annual awards banquet.

Joe Mark was honored by the association Feb. 28 for his pioneering work in developing and implementing a sign maintenance and inventory system on the county's road system.Under his direction, the county has a complete record of all road signs and markers, such as stop, direction and informational signs. The county's public works department has set up procedures with the sheriff's department to immediately replace lost or damaged signs, when notified, to reduce the risks of an accident.

"His effort to improve safety is of great importance to all who travel the roads throughout Davis County," said public works director Sid Smith.
