The San Francisco Giants Wednesday placed right-hander Kelly Downs on the 15-day disabled list and replaced him with right-hander Jeff Brantley.
Downs, who started Wednesday's game against Montreal and gave up three runs and six hits, left after four innings complaining of stiffness in his right shoulder. The injury was formally diagnosed as an inflamed posterior shoulder."He was hurting before the game started," San Francisco Manager Roger Craig said. "He had this problem for about a month and pitched with it. Most of the time, he can get loose, but today he couldn't."
Downs, a native of Bountiful, is 13-9 with a 3.32 ERA. He becomes the fourth member of San Francisco's Opening Day rotation to spend time on the disabled list. Only 39-year-old Rick Reuschel has yet to miss a start.
"This is a little late in the season to keep losing pitchers," General Manager Al Rosen said.
