Some 2 million Americans are affected by schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder that costs the nation about $30 billion annually, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

This includes not only direct costs of treatment but income losses due to disability, the largest proportion.The Institute of Medicine reports that schizophrenic patients occupy over half the hospital beds for the mentally ill and retarded and a quarter of all hospital beds in the U.S.

Direct costs of the illness are estimated at $4 billion to $6 billion annually, according to NIMH.
