Salt Lake police issued a demonstration permit Thursday to a religious group opposed to the showing of the movie "The Last Temptation of Christ," city officials said.

Mike Stimpson, Salt Lake City, said he filed the petition for the permit on behalf of "concerned Christians." The group will be composed of "a loose alliance of Christians of several different denominations," he said. The permit will allow up to 100 people to demonstrate on the sidewalk at the Centre Theatre, 300 S. State St., said Nita Wright, a Salt Lake police spokeswoman. The movie opens Friday in Salt Lake City.

The group is picketing the movie because it presents an "unbiblical view of Jesus Christ," Stimpson said. The group will not attempt to prevent people from viewing the movie but rather will air the biblical side of the story of Jesus Christ, he said.
