A man who stomped a pigeon to death has been sentenced to five days in jail for the crime.
District Judge Charles M. Morrissey said Clarence Atkis, 61, lured the bird to him with popcorn, then stepped on it, kicked it and squashed it.Morrissey earlier this week sentenced Atkis to five days on a charge of animal cruelty.
"A life is precious, as I look at it," Morrissey said. "The law does cover (pigeons) too, even though a lot of people don't like them."
An onlooker was so upset over the August 15 incident in Market Square downtown that she reported it to a city policeman, who arrested the Brushton resident.
Morrissey said Atkis gave no reason for his actions.
