Residents of Beatrice, Neb., are so happy with the name of the newest member of Britain's royal family they have decided to throw a baby shower.

Diane Schwenke, executive secretary of the Gage County Visitors Committee, said the committee is asking for gifts to send to her royal highness, Princess Beatrice of York. The princess, born Aug. 8 to Prince Andrew and his wife, Sarah, the Duke and Duchess of York, was named Beatrice Elizabeth Mary this week.

Schwenke wants area merchants to donate the gifts by Sept. 1 so they can be sent to Beatrice by her one-month birthday. A special baby shower is planned that day to mark the event, she said.

"We'd like to put together a gift package and send it over to her," she said. The package can contain "anything from baby shoes to gift certificates, a bottle, whatever." The city also will extend an open invitation for Beatrice to visit the southeastern Nebraska city.

The idea arose from a brainstorming session on ways to promote Gage County, Schwenke said.

"Here was an opportunity to point out we're only one of two communities in the whole United States to have the name of Beatrice," she said, adding the name is "currently being spread across newspapers around the world."

The other Beatrice is in Alabama.
