Lu Ning, a University of Utah senior, won the Midland-Odessa Symphony National Young Artist competition in the piano division at Odessa College, Odessa, Texas.

Ning was one of 50 contestants representing major universities and schools.The award includes the opportunity to perform with the Midland-Odessa Symphony. Ning will perform Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto March 16-17.

Ning, a native of China, previously won the Gina Bauchauer contest held in Bejing. He won the grand prize at the University of Utah SummerArts piano competition in 1990 and will perform with the Utah Symphony this summer.

The piano performance major is a student of Dr. Susan H. Duehlmeier, assistant professor of music.
