Participation in the Fourth Annual Green River Trail Ride into the San Rafael Swell will be limited this spring and will take a different route than previous years.
Duane Riches, special events coordinator for the Green River Chamber of Commerce, said the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Price has limited participation this year to 125 horseback riders per trip. A second trip could be planned if the number of registrants warrants it, he said.Preregistration is required by March 1 for the event, which will take riders on a 30-mile journey along the old wagon route between Green River in Emery County and Hanksville, Garfield County. The route used to follow the old U.S. mail trail.
Organizers promise a breathtaking ride through red-rock country and an experience reminiscent of the "wild West" during the two-day event March 16 and 17.
The route takes riders from the Greasewood Flat corral south toward the reef of the San Rafael Swell, along the ridges of sheer rock cliffs to the top of a butte and down to a ranch for an old-fashioned Western cookout and campout.
Riders must register in person the first day at 6:30 a.m. Departure of vehicles and rigs follows at 9 a.m. from the Green River Fire Station, on the corner of Broadway and Green River Avenue.
Riders provide their own horses or mules and lunches both days, drinking water or any other beverages, and camping gear. Horses should be shod, and riders need clothing appropriate for moderately warm daytime and chilly nighttime temperatures. No dogs or guns are allowed.
The $40 registration fee per rider includes rig shuttle service from the trailhead to the Hanksville Airport, a pack truck, water and hay, veterinary service, the catered chuckwagon dinner and breakfast the second day.
Friends and family can take U-24 to the campsite at the old Garvan Ranch to join in the Dutch-oven cookout and campfire program March 16. Extra tickets at $10 a plate must be purchased by March 6.
