A Provo man accused of trying to kill his wife in 1988 is free on his own recognizance after pleading guilty and mentally ill to a reduced charge of aggravated assault.

Faitau Owen Tipa, 36, entered the plea Monday in 4th District Court. He was originally charged with attempted murder and has been in custody since the July 15, 1988, shooting of his wife. He has spent most of his incarceration at the Utah State Hospital undergoing competency testing.Deputy county attorney Jim Taylor said the mentally ill plea will give the judge more options in sentencing Tipa. He could be referred to the Psychiatric Security Review Board. Tipa's sentencing will be March 29 before Judge Cullen Y. Christensen.
