Sixteen people were killed in 12 Utah traffic accidents in January, the Utah Highway Safety Office said.

The numbers were smaller than those of January 1990, when 22 accidents claimed 26 lives. But last month's deaths were just under the 10-year average of 17 for January, safety officials said.Three of the fatalities last month were pedestrians and four were involved in a fog-related, multivehicle pileup on I-215 in North Salt Lake, safety officials said.
