Former President Jimmy Carter says he never met Saddam Hussein but had many opportunities.

"I don't know him," Carter said Thursday at a seminar on the Mideast. "I was so displeased with his invasion of Iran in 1980 that I refused to go there. And although he invited me to come to Baghdad several times, I chose not to go."But Carter said he did not believe the Iraqi president must be overthrown. "There can be peace with him as a discredited leader in his own country," he said.
