The high-speed chase was over and a SWAT team had tear-gassed the car before officers learned the driver was a suspect in a beer theft from a convenience store earlier in the evening.

Just before 7:30 p.m., officer Bill Barratt noticed a driver tailgating and turned on his flashing lights to pull the car over near 2700 West and 3100 South. The car speeded up and took three West Valley patrol cars on a chase that exceeded 100 mph through traffic on Redwood Road and North Temple, said Lt. Richard Sweeney.A police description of the suspect helped officers and dispatchers make the connection with the beer theft reported by a convenience store earlier in the evening, Sweeney said.

The man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, evading a police officer and for the beer theft.
