The International Committee of the Red Cross has been unable to visit an estimated 35 allied prisoners of war held by Iraq despite repeated pleas to the Baghdad government, a spokesman said Wednesday.

ICRC President Cornelio Sommaruga has made a further request to Baghdad to permit visits to the prisoners by Red Cross delegates already in the Iraqi capital, the spokesman said, speaking shortly after Baghdad announced it had completed its pullout from Kuwait. The ICRC also announced it was sending additional personnel to Saudi Arabia to bolster its delegation. Visits to thousands of Iraqi prisoners captured by the allies during the Persian Gulf war are proceeding normally, the spokesman said.
