Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese teamed up in "Taxi Driver," "Mean Streets" "New York, New York" and "King of Comedy," but "GoodFellas" marked the first time they had worked together in 10 years.

"We needed time to learn more about ourselves," Scorsese says. At times during their years of collaborations, Scorsese began to feel proprietary toward De Niro. "When I saw `The Deer Hunter' (directed by Michael Cimino), for example, I was nervous watching," he says. "It was like somebody who was extremely close to me having an affair with someone else."
