A 4th District judge ordered a Highland man to be evaluated by two doctors to determine if the man is competent to enter a plea on three felony sex charges.
William O. Hayes, 64, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Feb. 15 to aggravated sexual abuse, rape and sodomy of a child, all first-degree felonies. The case was continued for one week so attorneys could research the law pertaining to such pleas.Friday Judge Ray M. Harding said Hayes should be evaluated by mental health doctors to determine if he is competent to enter the insanity plea. Hayes is one of five men charged with sex crimes with a 13-year-old girl. The girl allegedly exchanged sexual favors for cigarettes and alcohol.
