A West Valley man accused of beating his wife to death pleaded not guilty Monday to second-degree murder charges filed against him.

Gary Lee Mabe, 38, entered his plea before 3rd District Judge Kenneth Rigtrup. He is charged with the slaying of Carol Mabe, 45, whose severely beaten body was found lying on the floor inside her cubicle at Timesaver Industrial, 1515 S. Pioneer Road (2350 West), on Dec. 5, 1990.Court documents state that Mabe - after being advised of his Miranda rights - admitted to a Salt Lake police detective that he struck the victim in the head with a metal bar and a pipe wrench, intending to cause her death.

Defense attorney Lynn Brown plans to file a motion asking the court to suppress the confession and statement Mabe made to the detective. Rigtrup will hold a hearing to discuss the matter on April 8.
