Fire swept through a West Valley garage Monday destroying several power tools and causing $15,000 damage.
West Valley Fire battalion chief Stan Varney said the blaze started in a garage attached to a home at 3451 S. 3200 West about 8:30 p.m.A brick wall between the garage and the house helped prevent flames from spreading into the home, Varney said.
He said the blaze had burned for a long time before neighbors called the fire department.
"When we arrived, there were a lot of flames; it took awhile for it to get that big," he said.
A dozen firefighters from West Valley City responded to the blaze and doused the flames in about 10 minutes.
Witnesses heard several small "gunshot like" explosions in the garage before firefighters arrived.
Varney said investigators were trying late Monday to determine the exact cause of the explosions. "But there were gas cans and batteries in the garage," he said.
Investigators had not yet determined the cause of the fire late Monday.
No injuries were reported.
