Like crocuses, proposals to build hotels in the Provo/Orem area are springing up all over.
The Deseret News has learned that Richards Development, a California-based company, is looking at constructing a hotel at the mouth of Provo Canyon. Last week, ABP Investments, an investment group comprised of the principals of WordPerfect Corp., and Marriott Corp. acknowledged they are considering a joint venture to build a hotel in the Provo/Orem area.Richards Development is looking at building a 200- to 300-room facility on part of the Olmsted property, owned by PacificCorp, at the mouth of Provo Canyon.
"As of yet, we have not solidified anything," said George Richards, owner of Richards Development.
The development would be south of the conclave of existing buildings at the Olmsted, several of which are listed on the National Historical Register. The Olmsted began operating in 1904 as part of L.L. Nunn's alternating current system, which was one of the first long-distance electrical transmission systems in the world.
Richards' hotel proposal is partly linked to his interest in developing a technology park near the Cascade Golf Course on 800 North in Orem. Richards said he and Keven Stratton, owner of the golf course, are discussing ways to incorporate the course in the technology park.
Richards said although Utah wasn't a good place to invest money 10 years ago, it is now.
"We have heard nothing official," Orem City Manager Daryl Berlin said. "We've just heard about these ideas through the grapevine."
