Merchant and public official James Habersham, born in England in 1712, came to Georgia in 1738.

Habersham set up a business exporting furs, rice, lumber and naval supplies to England and the West Indies. He also helped found one of America's first orphanages with the British evangelist George Whitefield.Habersham held many public offices and was acting governor of Georgia from 1771 to 1773. He died in 1775.
