While the 3A prep basketball state tournament may be history and the 4A state tournament already at the halfway point, the rest of the state's teams - the 2A and 1A squads - move into the postseason with their respective region tournaments.
The 4A and 3A teams use the regular region season to determine seeding to the state tournaments. However, the 2A and 1A leagues all employ postseason region playoffs as the means for teams to earn berths to the state tournaments. Here's a look at the different league tourneys, their sites, dates and formats:
This 2A league has an eight-team, three-round tournament scheduled to start Thursday at Snow College. The winners of the four first-round (or quarterfinal) games are guaranteed state-tournament berths, with Friday's semifinals and Saturday's finals determining the order of the top four seeds.
First-round losers pair up Friday, with the two winners of those consolation games also earning a trip to the state playoffs. The two consolation winners face off Saturday to determine the fifth- and sixth-place seeds.
The seeding for the Region 9 tournament - 1, South Summit; 2, North Sanpete; 3, Juab; 4, Grantsville; 5, Manti; 6, Morgan; 7, Grand County; 8, Park City.
The other 2A league follows the same format as Region 9. The Region 10 playoffs begin Thursday at Delta High.
Seeding for the Region 10 tournament - 1, San Juan; 2, North Sevier; 3, Hurricane; 4, Richfield; 5, Beaver; 6, Millard; 7, Delta; 8, Kanab.
The postseason is already a week old for this 1A league, with eight teams battling for seven spots in Friday's semifinals and Saturday's finals at Tooele High.
In the winners-bracket games Friday, Dugway meets Wendover and Rich faces North Summit. All four teams are assured of one of the league's top four berths. Friday's winners play Saturday for Nos. 1 and 2, while Friday's losers play Saturday for Nos. 3 and 4.
On the consolation side of the bracketing, Rowland Hall meets St. Joseph and Manila takes on ICS in two Friday games. Friday's consolation winners play Saturday for the fifth- and sixth-place seeds, while Friday's two losers battle Saturday for the seventh and final berth.
The three-day, eight-team tournament for this 1A league begins Thursday at Southern Utah University, with five berths on the line. First-round winners earn assurances of state-playoff entry and play in Friday's semifinals and Saturday's finals to determine the first-through-fourth seeding.
First-round losers meet in consolation play Friday, with the winners of those two games squaring off Saturday in a winner-take-the-last-berth contest.
Seeding for the Region 12 tournament - 1, Piute; 2, Panguitch; 3, Parowan; 4, Enterprise; 5, Valley; 6, Milford; 7, Bryce Valley; 8, winner of preliminary playoff between Wayne and Escalante.
The eight-team 1A league takes its three-day tourney back to the College of Eastern Utah, with the first round starting Thursday. Four teams will advance from Region 13 to the 1A state playoffs.
The key to this tournament's different format is that a team must win two games to make the state tournament.
The winners of Thursday's first-round games pair up for Friday's semifinals, while Thursday's losers do the same in consolation play. Friday's winners-bracket victors both claim their second tourney win, assuring them of a state berth. Those two teams play each other Saturday to determine Nos. 1 and 2 berths.
The Region 13 teams are seeded in the league playoffs as two separate divisions, with the squads pairing up in inverse manner. For example, the two No. 1 teams meet the two No. 4 teams, and the No. 2 teams take on the No. 3 teams. Seeding is - North: 1, Duchesne' 2, Tabiona; 3, Altamont; 4, East Carbon. South: 1, Green River; 2, Monticello; 3, Monument Valley; 4, Whitehorse.
