Mark Bavaro, the New York Giants' starting tight end, will undergo an unusual surgical procedure Tuesday to replace a dead bone in his left knee with a bone from a cadaver.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that if the surgery is successful, the rehabilitation period could last 3-6 months. The paper, quoting two unidentified sources with knowledge of Bavaro's condition, avascular necrosis, said it's hoped that the new bone will provide a framework allowing Bavaro's own bone to grow and create new cells.
